However, some colleges are alleviating or decreasing out-of-state tuition charges, according to The U.S. News and World Report. High-ranking, popular colleges that already attract many intelligent prospective students are not decreasing out-of-state charges. These colleges have many students who are willing to pay the high fees. Also, these schools have stricter restrictions for who can apply for in-state tuition. Most of these schools only allow students to receive in-state tuition if they graduated from an in-state high school or their parents live in that state, according to The U.S. News and World Report. However, some of these schools are making it easier for out-of-state students to attain in-state tuition. The U.S. News and World Report stated that there are ways to avoid the higher out-of-state tuition charges by moving to the state to pay taxes and claim residency. However, most students must live in the state for about a year before they can qualify for in-state tuition.Traditionally, the restrictions are tougher in states that attract more students. California is one of the strictest states. Some colleges are allowing students to register in-state tuition to students after living on campus for a certain amount of time, registering to vote in that state and paying local taxes, according. The restrictions and details are not firm, but if students make efforts toward the aforementioned details, then it will help their cause. Also, many other colleges reward out-of-state students with in-state tuition if they maintain a certain GPA (usually 2.5 or higher) or achieve a certain ACT/SAT score, according to The U.S. News and World Report. Source: Pixabay Credit: GeraltActivities That Promote Critical Thinking SkillsWho, what, when, where, why and how.These types of questions are a great way to start your students on the path to thinking critically - bearing in mind that doing so doe s not imply that criticism and finding fault  are the order of the day.Of the six questions featured in the 5W+H above, the last W, ‘why’, is perhaps the most critical.“Why do you think that?” “Why did that happen?” “Why is that answer the right one?” â€" should you be going over a just-completed multiple choice answer sheet, for instance.Simply asking ‘why?’ is an easy way to prime your pupils for thinking and it only takes a few times of your doing so for him/her to anticipate your question and have the answer ready.It is also an excellent way to assure student engagement â€" both with you and with the subject material.Once s/he becomes adept at answering those questions, you can take that game to the next level by having them write down all of the steps they took in arriving at their conclusion to a question you pose.Not only does that address the psychomotor domain outlined by Benjamin Bloom but it also calls for the student to outline any prior knowledge of the topic in question and fosters metacognition â€" the understanding of one’s own thought processes.If you are a school teacher, surely you know how limited opportunities such as these are in class!Once you are assured of your student’s ability to render reasoned conclusions to questions you pose, you might move on to debating: offering up a topic for discussion and allowing time to prepare arguments.You may perhaps task him/her to compare and contrast aspects of the topic and explain how s/he arrived at the conclusion s/he reached.Naturally, debating works better with study groups, where there would inevitably be several opinions offered up.Once assured that your charges are capable of thinking critically, it is time to tackle the second major branch of higher order thinking.Use sticky notes to organise facets of a problem Source: Pixabay Credit: BluebudgieCultivating Problem Solving SkillsCritical thinking skills are only half of the equation representing higher order thinkin g. The other half is problem-solving skills, and fostering those requires finesse as well as a bit of educational psychology.Educational psychology concerns itself with cognitive development, learning methods and student assessment.Specifically applied to problem solving, cognitive development addresses how your students process information and how creatively they approach ‘problems’.The problem may be an open-ended question you pose, a word problem in their math homework or a social problem with other students at school.Yes, even those can impact student learning!Let’s assume, for the sake of this discussion that you have posed a challenging question that requires some thought. You get to see their critical thinking skills at work!1. You might suggest s/he  â€˜play’ with the problem. This encourages him/her to look at the issue from many different perspectives; you could even suggest a few.2. Break the problem down into component parts. What is involved? Who is involved? Wh ere did it happen? Why? How? You could then guide him/her to determining the biggest aspect of the problem or the aspect easiest to solve.5W+H is an excellent tool to use in problem solving activities!3. Get verbal! Reasoning through a problem out loud helps to slow down thought processes so that students don’t feel overwhelmed by the enormity of the issue.Perhaps, if your student is a kinesthetic learner (or particularly agitated), you might suggest s/he write down the main components of the problem on sticky-notes as s/he talks. One sticky for each aspect, and then organise them in order of importance.4. Focus on the process, not the answer: believe it or not, there is more satisfaction to be had by discussion of all that a problem entails than by arriving at a conclusion.5. If your student is a bit older (or more cognitively developed), you might try giving only pointed suggestions rather than guiding them to the desired response. Guiding is an effective technique if your stude nt is younger or less intellectually mature.No matter what the outcome of the problem-solving exercise is â€" whether or not s/he has arrived at a satisfactory conclusion, positive reinforcement is vital to student success.After all, the point of such exercises is to think more so than to solve, at least at the outset of this phase of intellectual development, right?Naturally, once s/he has mastered these skills, s/he would actually have to solve problems and come up with workable solutions.The good news is that, once you’ve helped your students train their minds to think effectively, coming up with answers to higher order thinking questions will be child’s play rather than a stress inducer.Does cultivating critical thinking and problem-solving skills take a lot of time and effort?Surprisingly not!As a part of your initial interview with students and their caregivers, you would naturally form an idea of that pupil’s cognitive abilities (and preferred learning style!) so that y ou can determine exactly what is needed from you.Armed with that background knowledge, as you work together you would continuously gauge his/her progress as a thinker through formative assessment.The insights you glean through these processes will give you an idea of how you should proceed with fostering higher-order thinking skills.Will that take you beyond the homework help you were hired to give?That depends on whether your pupil’s caregivers advocate for giving a man a fish versus teaching him to fish...We intuit that you stand firm on the side of teaching.Join the discussion: is it more vital to be a problem solver or a critical thinker?

Hair was new! Hair was a musical the likes of which had never been seen before. It came complete with drug usage, promiscuity, profanity and a racially integrated cast.It hit Broadway like an unstoppable force, running for a record 1,750 performances and then, it crossed the pond to shock and awe audiences in London during its nearly 2,000 shows.Hair was My Fair Lady on steroids; far from pining for something that might be ‘loverly’, Hair characters told ‘Enry ‘Iggins exactly where the bus stops and how to get on it.And then, they broke that hateful phonograph and used the pieces to light a fire.In short, Hair broke the mold of traditional musical theatre, flinging open the floodgates of style with such abandon and glee that show writers were tripping over themselves to come up with the next bawdy, raucous hit.Andrew Lloyd Webber soon followed up with Jesus Christ Superstar â€" although, because it incorporates no dialogue, it is more o f a rock opera than a musical.Still, Superstar’s success conclusively proved that rock music belongs on the London stage (and the Broadway stage, too!)Throughout the 70s, rock musicals continued to thrill audiences:The Wiz: Wizard of Oz revisited, this time with a lively dance scoreDreamgirls tells the story of the early days or Motown; this musical was later made into a film of the same name.Grease: the rollicking saga of life in a 1950s American high schoolPippin takes a stab at weaving history with fictionLittle Shop of Horrors â€" who wouldn’t thrill at a carnivorous plant?Little Shop sang us into the 80s, a time when rock and pop music was undergoing significant changes â€" the death of disco and the birth of synthesizers; at times it seemed that music itself didn’t know which way to turn.In all of that turmoil, rock musicals’ popularity waned. Neither critics nor bewildered audiences knew quite what to make of it, with some raving it was a masterpiece and others getting downright hostile about it.Nevertheless, the story took on a life of its own. In spite of the band proclaiming it would never be played again, it caught the attention of several show developers, who went on to adapt it to the musical stage.What makes Tommy an opera is the lack of dialogue.In a similar vein comes The Wall, another exploration of isolation and emotional trauma. Here again, the music tells the story; very little is said. By the end of the show, the audience has experienced everything from the trauma of war to the crushing guilt of failed relationships.Both Tommy and The Wall started out as concept albums, meaning that every song relates to an overarching theme â€" or, if you like, is another brick in the...Now find out how the concept musical differs from concept albums.Renown Rock/Pop MusicalsBesides the shows mentioned so far, the list of rock and pop musicals is fairly long and certainly well-populated.The Rocky Horror Show is a rock/pop sensation written by Richard O’Brien. Meant to be a tribute to the B-grade horror movies of the 30s with a bit of sci-fi thrown in, it has since developed a cult following.Chess, written by Lloyd Webber collaborator Tim Rice with ABBA’s Bjorn and Benny describes a chess face-off during the Cold War. It enjoyed a three-year run in Londo n but fizzled on Broadway.Admittedly, it had been largely altered to appeal to American musical audiences. Surely it didn’t lose much of its magic in the rewrite… maybe US audiences just didn’t like the concept?Starlight Express more than made up for the lukewarm reception Chess received. Andrew Lloyd Webber, creator of Starlight Express, is one of musical theatre's most prolific composers! Even more impressive: it is the most successful musical in Germany, having run continuously since 1986 in its own, purpose-built theatre.The story has been told a million times: a steam engine races against newer, sleeker models in the hopes of impressing Pearl, a first class carriage… no double entendre there!This show’s novelty is that, not only do the performers sing and act, but they do everything on roller skates!Imagine A Chorus Line or Mean Girls on roller skates… that might make for a pretty terrific musical comedy!Rent: if you haven’t at least heard about this theatrical sensation, we would sadly have to conclude that your name must be Tommy, or maybe Pink (from Tommy and The Wall, respe ctively).Inspiration came from La Bohème but show writer Jonathan Larson gave the story a modern day twist. The end result is a cast of struggling artists trying to make it in New York’s East Village, under the spectre of AIDS.It started on a small stage in Broadway’s theatre district, eventually moving to a larger stage and playing for 12 years. It took the Tony Award for best musical in 1996, and the Drama Desk Award for best director.It is unfortunate that Mr Larson died before he could collect his award; he was only 35 years old. Who knows what new musical he could have treated us to had he not been so tragically stricken?If you missed your chance to see a live performance of Rent, you may consider renting/streaming it. Far from being a film musical, it is a recording of the last time it played on Broadway.Are you still not convinced you too could become a fan of musicals? Do you need to have ‘rock’ in the title to believe the music and lyric will be rock-flavoured (or pop flavoured, as you wish)?Try these on, then:Rock of Ages: often considered more of a jukebox musical because none of its music was written expressly for the show, it features songs from the likes of Twisted Sister, Pat Benatar and Styx, among others.There is a story connecting all of the songs; in fact, it may also be considered a book musical because the songs are so well integrated into the story.We Will Rock You â€" need we even mention Queen?Bat Out of Hell: as an updated turn to the classic Peter Pan set in a post-apocalyptic New York, Jim Steinman definitely hit his mark. Although this show enjoyed a relatively short run, it nevertheless won several awards.School of Rock: following the famed film’s storyline, Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music for the stage show; JoAnn Hunter choreographed it. Guess what? From there you can save the files to your computer or device, or even print it all out then. 2.  Ultimate Theatre Music Resource for Singers A student of mine came across this well-versed, purely educational-use-only Tumblr blog. Within this blog, links to PDF sources of sheet music, mostly Broadway sheet music, are provided for free. Creating Homework Stations for Kids with ADHD Like it or not homework is about to become part of your childs daily routine when school starts back up in the fall. For kids with ADHD, getting into the habit of doing homework is never easy. Fortunately, parents can help make the adjustment a little less painful by having a homework station filled with supplies and ready to go by the first day of school. Creating a homework station that works for kids with ADHD means considering their unique organizational, motivational, and attention-related challenges when planning the location, the supplies, and the clutter control strategies. Location Kids who dont have ADHD may be able to sit down in any corner of the house or bedroom and get their homework completed without any problem. But, when a child has ADHD, its a different story. Where he or she does homework can have a big impact on how quickly and accurately he or she gets it done. Monitoring: Kids with ADHD need to be monitored during homework time. Without supervision, they are much more likely to procrastinate instead of getting started right away, and once they do get started they will lose focus more quickly. Monitoring and supervising your child doesnt mean sitting next to him or her during homework time, but it does mean being someplace where your child can see you and where you can check-in while he or she is working. Consistency: Every childs homework station is different, and kids with ADHD may have some unique preferences some may prefer to stand while they work, others may be most comfortable working on the floor instead of sitting at a desk. But all kids with ADHD should do their work in the exact same spot every day. They will quickly come to associate this homework spot with homework time, making it easier for them to transition quickly from play time to work time. Having a consistent homework spot also eliminates nightly time-wasting arguments or negotiations with kids about where they will be doing their homework. Supplies Making sure that every homework supply your child needs is readily available at his or her homework station is important for kids with ADHD. Why? Searching for supplies and sharpening pencils are two of the most popular (and most effective!) homework procrastination strategies! Wondering which supplies to include? Heres a list to get you started: Sharpened pencils (at least 5 well sharpened pencils) Pencil sharpener Eraser (one that works well) Colored pencils or crayons Paper (printer paper lined loose-leaf paper) Scissors Glue stick Ruler Timer (setting time limits and time goals will be an important part of the homework routine) Clock A place to hang their backpack near their homework station Access to a computer nearby A large hard surface as a work area A comfortable chair (based on your childs preferences) Clutter-Free Organization Clutter is a huge distraction for kids with ADHD, especially when they are doing homework. Maintaining a clutter-free homework area will help your child get started on homework quickly and stay on task. It will also make it much easier to notice when he or she is running low on supplies or has managed to misplace or break all his or her pencils (again!). via Simple Made Pretty via Apartment Therapy Create an organized supply system: All kids would benefit from an organized supply system, but for kids with ADHD organization is practically essential. Instead of using a single shoebox, supply bin, or drawer to store their supplies, use individual cups, bins or a divided tray. Label each compartment with the supplies that should be included. If your child doesnt have a dedicated desk and will be working at the kitchen table or on the floor with a lap desk, then use a supply caddy with labeled compartments that he or she can move to and from the homework location each day. Just remember to place only one type of supply in each compartment and use labels liberally. Create a clutter-clean up routine: The best way to manage clutter is to prevent it from building up in the first place. As part of your childs homework routine, have him or her put all his or her supplies away, throw out loose papers, and sharpen the pencils as soon as his or her homework is finished. This way the workspace will be well stocked and clutter-free the next time your child sits down to do homework. Having your childs homework station set up and ready to go by the start of the school year will help him or her transition more smoothly into a daily homework routine. Having clear expectations around homework and putting a homework when-then plan into place are also essential for homework success. Hundreds of thousands of people have gone through their freshman year of college with regrets and wishes and dreams of what could have been, what they should have done. But that only means that there is greater hope for current college freshmen if they are only willing to listen and trust the people who have been there. Compiled from the thoughts and opinions of dozens of undergraduate sophomores, juniors, and seniors, this list is comprised of the most common mistakes that freshmen make their first year of school. Party Animal You’re finally in college. No parents, no teachers looking over your shoulder. You’re free! We all know this feeling and the urge to experience a party life we’ve seen in movies and on television for the past few years of high school. It looks fantastic and fun, with no one to stop you. However, if you’re not careful, partying early on and taking it too far can irreversibly damage your entire college experience. Yes, the partying scene in college can be vital to making friends and is a large part of university social life. Don’t avoid it completely due to a fear of overdoing it. But it’s also very important to trust yourself and your limits and not to give in to what you see around you if you feel uncomfortable. I have seen firsthand many individuals immediately jump into the party scene head on, staying up late and drinking alcohol night after night. Sure, it looks like they’re having a great time without a care in the world but pretty soon, the other aspects of their lives invariably suffer. Grades will drop; it will become almost impossible to catch up on classes. Remember, you and/or your parents are paying for an education, not for a social life. Go to class and take advantage of the thousands of dollars being spent on these four years. Save the partying for the weekends and know your limits. Work hard so that when the opportunity arises, you can have fun without feeling guilty. Procrastinating Many of us are used to being able to scrape by academically in high school, especially during senior year. You’re focused on the future; you’re accepted into college, you’ve conquered the entire high school curriculum. Procrastination runs rampant in most of us by the end of our high school career. It is sometimes very easy to save studying until the last minute or to complete a project in just a few days, a few hours. We arrive on campus and have the misconception that we can continue the same bad habits. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. College professors have high standards. Assignments and tests are much more complex and difficult. You can no longer study the night before and expect to achieve a passing grade. College courses are fast-paced and cover much more material than high school courses. If you’ve taken a few AP classes, this is more comparable to the university level. Instead of falling behind the first few months trying to get acclimated to the new work and study-load, expect to spend time each day going over new material and give yourself at least a week to work on a project or paper. It’s tempting to procrastinate. Just say no. Your GPA freshman year will set the tone for the rest of your college career. The “Food is Free!” Perception This is probably the first time you have to feed yourself. No mom to cook you dinner or have your breakfast on the table for you, no ½ hour lunch scheduled in the middle of your day. You are on your own. This means that you make your own dietary decisions now. You also probably have a meal plan. You swipe your student ID card and all of a sudden it’s an All You Can Eat buffet in the cafeteria. Late night snacks, extra hash browns in the morning, dessert with dinner. A lot of people have unused money on their meal plans that doesn’t roll over to the next semester, so they fill up on as much food as possible so as not to waste it. This can quickly become detrimental to your health and eating habits. We’ve all heard of the “Freshman 15”, the fifteen pounds that many kids find themselves gaining in the first few months of school. Come up with a dietary plan before leaving for school. It’s not a bad idea to start planning your own meals a few months before orientation. Otherwise, you may come home for Thanksgiving looking a little heftier than when you left. Neglecting University Resources It may seem overwhelming at first; the amount of resources open to you at a university: the career center, your advisor, peer advisors, student groups, and activities’ fairs. Don’t be overwhelmed. Take advantage of it. Visit your professors, see your advisor, and talk to the upperclassmen about everything and anything. It can only help you find your way in a world with infinite possibilities, problems, and solutions. Don’t be afraid to seek help. Not Taking Advantage of Internships Many freshmen make the mistake of disregarding internships, allocating them to junior and senior year of college. However, especially in our current job market, you need to begin amassing experience as soon as possible. Even if you are not one hundred percent sure what you want to major in or do with your life, experience in any field will increase your value in a future corporation or occupation. Looking for internships freshman year allows you to make contacts and increase your cover letter writing and professional interaction skills without the added pressure of impending graduation. Although multiple internship opportunities will be limited to upperclassmen, with some digging and career office assistance, you can find an organization to enhance your resume. Refusing to Stop and Smell the Roses Whether you’re going to college far away or staying in the area, there will be new places and sights to visit and explore. Don’t forget that life is an adventure. When you go to a new place, it’s a chance to see and experience things you never previously had an opportunity to. If you’re in a big city, escape that university campus bubble and venture out into the unknown (safely, of course). If you’re in the middle of nowhere, get to know your campus and the local eateries and hangouts. Every college is equipped with its own ecosystem. Make it a goal to master it and the surrounding area by the end of freshman year. Trust us. We’ve been there. We know what we wish we would have done and achieved. As upperclassmen, we come with knowledge college freshmen have no way of being in possession of.
